In my work, I create body parts out of artificial flowers and glue them onto wooden boards. I came up with the idea of making body parts because I plan on becoming a nurse practitioner in the future. The reason I chose to make them with flowers is because I’ve been interested in the beauty of nature and what better way to express the human body than with nature. I plan on creating even more pieces similar to my summer work.
When starting my work, I create the basic outline and shape of the organ or body part. I then fill the outline with flowers. I choose the flowers that look the most real and I typically use the ones that look similar to wild flowers.
I think my work from last year was a little all over the place and I didn’t have a signature style but now that I’ve found a subject to work with, my work will have an ongoing theme. The work I do is challenging because at time I have to take tweezers to place the flowers in the perfect spot. Although it is challenging, I think doing something with a challenge makes me better as an artist.
